If you have one or two employees, you may have no trouble keeping track of hours, deducting taxes and the like, and you can take care of it on your own. Most people don't have time for this however, and they turn to software, or to a payroll systems company to take care of paying employees and withholding taxes for them. Payroll can be complicated, and making mistakes can mean big problems for you and your employees.

If you choose to go with software for your payroll systems, you should be able to find a program that not only takes care of payroll, but also takes care of keeping track of all of your financial affairs. Peachtree Accounting is great for this, though they are not the only game in town. You may also want to consider QuickBooks or any other accounting software meant to help a small business keep track of their affairs. You want something that will keep track of everything that comes in and out so you have everything ready for your accountant at the end of the year.

You can also go with a payroll systems company. The first one that comes to mind for me is PayChex, probably because they the ones that send my husband his check each week. Many companies large and small are now going with payroll systems like these, because they are quick, efficient, and take most of the work out of taking care of your payroll. You just have to send in the information and they take care of deductions, direct deposits, and sending out the paychecks on whatever date you specify. Each company may have different services, so shop around before you decide whom you want to use for payroll services.

No matter how reputable your payroll systems may be, make sure you keep an eye on what is going on. Mistakes can be made, and these mistakes can come back to haunt you. An employee may be getting paid too much, and no one may notice. There may also be mistakes in tax rates that can cause you to owe big money at the end of the year. For the most part, these mistakes won't happen with good payroll services, but remember that it is in your best interest to keep an eye on things from time to time.
