Some Internet providers offer a firewall with their service, and it is in your best interest to use it. If they don't, you can get a free download from Zone Alarm. They have a paid service, but they also have a great free firewall. When you have a firewall on your computer, it is much harder for anyone to see the information you enter on an online application.
Also remember that not all sites are safe. If you do not see https:// at the beginning of the web address for your online application, you are not on a secure site. Do not enter any information. Also remember that there are a lot of phishing scams out there, and if you get an offer via email, don't click on any link. Do a search to find that companies website and type the address in yourself. Some people build look-alike sites with an online application for credit or loans, and they do this just to get your financial information. The only loan that will be going on here will be you lending a thief your financial information to do with what they please.
