From The Auto Auction
Auto Auction
Living in Lancaster County, PA, I am right in the middle of auto auction mania. Manheim Auto Auction is only minutes from my house and I pass the thousands of cars that are onsite almost everyday. I am always amazed at how quickly the cars pass through the auto auction and are shipped to wherever their destination is. Many times, when people trade in a vehicle, the dealership doesn't keep that particular car on their lots. They often times will sell that vehicle to an auto auction to be resold to other dealerships or individuals. In fact, an auto auction is where a great deal of used car dealerships get their inventory from.
If the auto auction is reputable, and in my hometown they almost all are, they check out the vehicles before they sell them. The last thing that the auto auction needs is to be held responsible for selling a lemon to a dealership. Hopefully, the dealership also has mechanics going over the vehicles as well to search for anything else that may need to be worked on or fixed before resale. If a dealership sells a car straight from the auto auction without actually looking over the vehicle, they aren't a dealership that I would want to be affiliated to. Most times, an auto auction is not open to the public. In my hometown, the only people who can attend and purchase from the auto auction are dealers. If there is a particular car that you know that you want, you can get a dealer to go to the auto auction and find you that particular vehicle. However, I personally could not walk into the auto auction and buy a vehicle for cheaper than I would at a regular dealership. That just isn't possible. I have purchased
vehicles in that manner though - asking a dealer to get me a particular vehicle. It took several weeks until they could find the vehicle that I was desiring with the right mileage and features that I was interested in. Once they finally found one, they purchased it from the auto auction and I was driving it within days. My price was definitely lower than it would have been had I not asked a dealer to find me something, but it was not so cheap that I had to question its condition.
The majority of the vehicles that I see on a daily basis that are at the auto auction, are incredibly modern cars. There might be rows of the exact same model and color of a particular vehicle but at least I know what cars are in demand. The auto auction has an excellent reputation because of their picky nature. They don't purchase vehicles just for the sake of it. They purchase vehicles that are worthwhile and popular. If I were a dealer, I'd be filling my lots with vehicles from the auto auction - no doubt about it.
