The Incredible Hulk was the creation of Stan Lee and Jack Kirby and appeared in the Marvel comics. The Hulk was a very popular character and made a successful transfer to television. The Incredible Hulk TV series ran from 1978-1982. Other versions of the story have been told in several animated series and a movie.

Dr David Banner is a nuclear physicist who performs a laboratory experiment involving gamma radiation. There is an accident and Banner is exposed to the harmful rays. This incident has catastrophic consequences and Banner's life is totally changed as a result. After this, Banner transforms into the monstrous, green-skinned Hulk, whenever he is under stress or feels angry. The Hulk goes into rages and is a destructive force with his super human strength. When he is calm again, he becomes the mild mannered Banner once more. The Incredible Hulk TV series is a sad tale, as Banner has to move from town to town, being pursued by a relentless reporter. His other self stops him from leading a normal life. He takes any job he can and can't stay long enough to have meaningful relationships.

The TV show caught the spirit of the character well and explored the subject of the dark side of the human psyche. The Hulk represents our deepest fears and primeval thoughts. The audience roots for him because he's a good guy who doesn't mean to hurt anyone and he's constantly misunderstood. Bill Bixby played Banner with a sympathetic performance and the Hulk was played by Lou Ferrigno who had a background in bodybuilding, weightlifting and professional football. He had also been Mr. Universe and was the perfect choice for his role in The Incredible Hulk TV series.

Different animated TV series have run over the years and the director, Ang Lee made a movie of the Incredible Hulk in 2003. Eric Bana played Dr Banner but the part of the Hulk was not taken by an actor. This time, the Hulk was created by special effects. Most true Hulk fans were disappointed with the movie and it didn't do well at the box office. The Hulk, having been created in the way that it was, lacked the vulnerability and human qualities, which Ferrigno had brought to his portrayal in The Incredible Hulk TV series. The series continues to be repeated on television and still receives a lot of respect, bringing in a new generation who love the green giant.
