Email attachments can contain viruses and worms that a person can unknowingly unleash into their computer with a simple click on the attachment to open it. Email spam filter software is designed to look for such email messages, and can help protect you by dropping spam email messages into a junk or bulk email folder automatically.

An email spam filter can help you keep annoying, unwanted messages out of your inbox but it can also reject mail that you may want as well. You will find less junk mail but you also may find that you are missing some mail that you would like to receive, too. A good example of this is the story I heard of a friend who opened a message with the title "Warning: Spreading Worms Through Yahoo Groups" and who found that they had done quite a bit of damage to their computer system. Within a few days their entire system collapsed because the worm ate memory. This particular worm literally ate the information off of the computer, making it impossible to retrieve.

There was no way to use system restore because the memory-eating worm also had a "task-kill" virus attached to it. The task kill element prevents you from using a program more than once. If you open a program like Adobe PhotoShop the virus would kill that task. If you tried to open it again you would find that you couldn't.

By the time this worm and virus were through with their system they wound up purchasing another computer since they had no idea how to reinstall their operating system and applications. All of this could have been avoided if they would have had a good email spam filter for protection. They would probably have never even seen the message since it would have been moved to the junk mail folder where it would be much less likely to have been opened.

The first thing you should do when getting a new computer is to install a solid email spam filter that you can truly rely on. Most people are happy with their spam filter service but you may notice that some emails that you really want to read may wind up in the bulk junk mail folder. This is most often the case when you have made on online purchase.

So be sure to check your bulk junk mail folder as much as you do your inbox. While this is a small inconvenience, it's worth the pain considering the peace of mind you'll get by having the email spam filter protecting your computer.
