Japanese Animation
Remember the time when all of us used to watch cartoon characters like tom and jerry? Well, I do. I spent long hours enjoying the exploits of the frisky mouse and the dumb old cat. I also spent a whole lot of time enjoying other carton characters like the road runner, wil e coyote and porky pig among others. Those cartoons (this of course was before the time of culture studies and the impact of cartoons on the psyche of kids) gave me several hours of viewing pleasure, kept me out of trouble and gave me fond memories as well.
I recently happened to wander across to a cartoon channel on the television. Now, I am aware that there have been a number of changes in the programming of the television stations in the recent past. But little did I know that all my favorite cartoons would have been replaced by Japanese animation!
In fact, Japanese animation is all one can see on any of the cartoon channels today. If it is not a Japanese animation series like gundam, it is animation for the characters of another country, done by Japanese animation artists. The very look and feel of the characters has changed. When once animals ruled the roost, nowadays androids, half-humans and robotic creatures have invaded our television screens. All thanks to the ever increasing popularity of Japanese animation.
In fact, I recall reading in one of the newspapers recently that Japanese animation has all but replaced the more traditional forms of animation. Gone are the days when homegrown artists would create fascinating creatures for the consumption of our children. Nowadays, it is artists trained in Japanese animation (a vast majority of whom happen to be Japanese... duh!) who create fantastic and often scary creatures to horrify our children.
But Japanese animation has its good side as well. For one thing, it has infused a new breath of life into an otherwise flagging industry. Before Japanese animation came onto the scene, cartoons and allied industries like comics were severely on the wane. But after Japanese animation and allied industries like animated films entered the scene, the youth across the world have taken to it like a duck takes to water. The entire region around Japan including the Philippines, hong kong, Singapore and even Thailand are heavily influenced by Japanese animation characters and consume the comics, films and videos produced like there is no tomorrow.
